How To Change Fish Tank Water Without Killing Your Fish?

Having a pet is one of the best things you can do in your life. It gives you something to take care of and also allows you to know that something depends on you. If you have kids, it is great for them to have a pet around so they know what it is like to have responsibility as it provides them with fantastic learning lessons that they can use for the rest of their lives.

However, many pets are simply a lot to deal with especially if you are looking into animals with more needs such as dogs or cats. These are animals that actually need to be looked after on  a daily basis, and some of us just do not have time for that.

That is why many people prefer to get fish. Fish are fantastic pets as they do not crave attention and are so easy to maintain. They are fantastic for decoration and they also are fun to have around the house. Fish are great first pets for kids, as there is hardly any mess and they are still fun to watch swim around.

With that being said, there are still common-sense things that you have to take care of with your fish. You must keep their living space clean, and you must feed them on a daily basis.

The good news about this is that there are plenty of devices available to you to help you with both the feeding and cleaning process to help these tasks get done fast and without your help. This is done by buying feeders and also water filters to enhance the quality of life of your fish.

However, if you are cleaning your fish tank and want to change the water, how do you keep your fish safe during this process? We are going to answer that and more in the next few paragraphs.

Cleaning the tank

So, let’s start with the most important thing to keep your fish healthy—keeping both the tank and the water in the tank clean. Just like your home, you want your aquarium to be clean in order to promote healthiness. A clean home is a healthy home, and the same can be said for a fish tank. They do not want to swim around in contaminated water or water that is full of bacteria for algae to grow. It can get gross, especially if you’ve seen a tank covered completely in green. This is why it is so important for you to clean the water.

One of the best ways to keep the water clean and secure is to purchase a water filtration system. These systems usually come with the water tank and will decrease bacteria levels of the water. But they can only do so much. At some point in time, preferably two or three times a year, you are going to have to completely change the fish tank water, but how do you do that without killing the fish?

Option 1

There are two options that you can choose from for this process. You may be surprised at how simple both of them are, mainly because this is a very simple process in our minds. The first thing that we recommend is buying a very cheap fish tank that you keep in storage and off to the side. There are many for under $30, that are not nice looking and not ones that you would want to put on display. However, they are perfect for this task. You simply need to take a net, and transfer your fish from one tank to the other, as you clean your primary tank. This allows them to swim around in the other tank as you clean. Sounds simple and it is!

Option 2

The second option is to fill plastic bags with water (like what you probably took your fish home in) and place your fish in them as you clean your tank. This one can be harder, although it might be cheaper. It still is going to keep your fish alive and free from any harm as you clean.

Conclusion

As you can see it is really easy to change your aquarium without killing your fish by doing things with common sense. We wish you the best in your cleaning process and do strongly recommend sticking with Option 1! Have the best time with your fish and remember they need you!
